A cantora baiana Gloria Bomfim lança pela Acari Records novo CD com 13 músicas inéditas de Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, a ela confiadas pelo próprio autor.
Após o sucesso do seu primeiro álbum Santo e Orixá (Acari Records), relançado por Maria Bethânia com o título de Anel de Aço (Quintanda/Biscoito Fino) – com 14 músicas inéditas de Paulo Cesar Pinheiro – a cantora baiana Gloria Bomfim presenteia o seu público fiel e crescente com o novo CD Chão de Terreiro (Acari Records).
As 13 músicas inéditas desse novo trabalho seguem o perfil do anterior, homenageando temas da cultura afro-brasileira. São cantigas de santo, sambas, samba-de-roda e toadas, arranjados pelo violonista Rafael Mallmith com acompanhamento de músicos jovens da maior qualidade, com participaçao especial de Luciana Rabello em duas faixas. As obras de Paulo Cesar Pinheiro encontram na voz única e personalíssima da cantora, numa interpretação forte, sensível e especialmente empoderada. Afinal, Gloria nasceu e foi criada nos terreiros de santo da Bahia.

Bio:
A cantora Glória Bonfim é uma das mais expressivas e autênticas vozes que conheço. Seu canto primitivo, forte, verdadeiro, despretensioso e absolutamente intuitivo é um diamante bruto que representa, de forma emocionada, a cultura dos terreiros de candomblé, trazida pelos negros africanos e mantida aqui pelos mestiços brasileiros. Resolvi registrar o que ouvi, cumprindo tanto quanto possível o papel de repórter, interferindo minimamente e apenas quando necessário. O repertório inédito foi recolhido da obra de Paulo César Pinheiro, compositor preferido da cantora, que a ela o entregou como um presente. Todas as músicas abordam temas ligados ao candomblé, e muitas têm a forma de cantigas de santo, utilizadas em rituais. Reuni alguns dos amigos que mais gosto, músicos que entendem e respeitam essa linguagem e que já admiravam a Glória das rodas na minha casa. Todos acertaram em cheio. A característica dessas cantigas se iniciarem por uma invocação, puxada pelos babalorixás ou yalorixás e respondida pelo coro das yaôs, foi respeitada por todos, se impondo aqui a qualquer concepção de arranjo. A energia que rolou no estúdio deixou claro que os orixás ficaram satisfeitos e aprovaram nossa homenagem. Axé!
A história dessa baiana é comovente e cinematográfica. Nascida em Areal, um pequeno povoado no interior da Bahia, Glória era requisitada desde muito menina pra cantar nas redondezas, em festas de casamento, batizados etc. Ela conta que muitas vezes foi tirada da cama por seu Tutu, festeiro do lugar, vestindo um camisú (daqueles de cambraia com calçola igual) e levada no balaio de um jegue pra animar essas festas. Não havia rádio e muito menos disco naqueles lugarejos em que a festa dependia dos músicos e cantores da região. Filha de Domingas e Miguel, a pequena intérprete de 8 anos agradava a todos com sua voz potente. De cima de um caixote de madeira, era ouvida de longe, garantindo boa dança e boa festa! Década de 60, o rock chegando às capitais, e o hit da pequena cantora era a valsa Viagem, de João de Aquino e Paulo César Pinheiro. A partir daqueles dias, a menininha começa a sonhar em ser cantora de verdade. Aos quatorze anos veio pro Rio à procura de melhores oportunidades. Exerceu diversas profissões e continuou cantando, nos finais de semana, nas rodas de samba do subúrbio, nas quadras de escolas de samba. Ali conheceu mestre Marçal que, encantado com sua voz, apelidou-a de Baianinha e convidou-a para as rodas da Velha Guarda da Portela.
Glória chegou a ir a algumas, mas em seguida Marçal faleceu e sua vida tomou outro rumo. Logo depois a conheci e, desde a primeira vez que ouvi seu canto, senti o que estava ali. Voz rascante e afinada, com volume impressionante, precisão rítmica admirável. E tinha cultura, ancestralidade. Seu repertório era irretocável. Comecei a reparar também que Paulo César Pinheiro era o compositor mais constante, com diversos parceiros: Mauro Duarte, João Nogueira, Eduardo Gudin e, naturalmente, João de Aquino. Quando decidi produzir esse disco pedi ao Paulinho Pinheiro, que também gosta da voz da Baianinha, músicas que tivessem o candomblé como tema. E o poeta tinha essas pérolas guardadas! O resultado está aí e com grande alegria compartilho com vocês a emoção de ouvir Gloria Bomfim.

Dear friends & colleagues,
Having arrived in Salvador 13 years earlier, I opened a record shop in 2005 in order to create an outlet to the wider world for Bahian musicians, many of them magisterial but unknown.
David Dye & Kim Junod for NPR found us (above), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (he's a huge jazz fan), David Byrne, Oscar Castro-Neves... Spike Lee walked past the place while I was sitting on the stoop across the street drinking beer and listening to samba from the speaker in the window...
But we weren't exactly easy for the world-at-large to get to. So in order to extend the place's ethos I transformed the site associated with it into a network wherein Brazilian musicians I knew would recommend other Brazilian musicians, who would recommend others...
And as I anticipated, the chalky hand of God-as-mathematician intervened: In human society — per the small-world phenomenon — most of the billions of us on earth are within some 6 or fewer degrees of each other. Likewise, within a network of interlinked artists as I've described above, most of these artists will in the same manner be at most a handful of steps away from each other.
So then, all that's necessary to put the Bahians and other Brazilians within possible purview of the wide wide world is to include them among a wide wide range of artists around that world.
If, for example, Quincy Jones is inside the matrix (people who have passed are not removed), then anybody on his page — whether they be accessing from a campus in L.A., a pub in Dublin, a shebeen in Cape Town, a tent in Mongolia — will be close, transitable steps away from Raymundo Sodré, even if they know nothing of Brazil and are unaware that Sodré sings/dances upon this planet. Sodré, having been knocked from the perch of fame and ground into anonymity by Brazil's dictatorship, has now the alternative of access to the world-at-large via recourse to the vast potential of network theory.
...to the degree that other artists et al — writers, researchers, filmmakers, painters, choreographers...everywhere — do also. Artificial intelligence not required. Real intelligence, yes.
Years ago in NYC I "rescued" unpaid royalties (performance & mechanical) for artists/composers including Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Mongo Santamaria, Jim Hall, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (for his rights in Bob Marley compositions; Clement was Bob's first producer), Led Zeppelin, Ray Barretto, Philip Glass and many others. Aretha called me out of the blue vis-à-vis money owed by Atlantic Records. Allen Klein (managed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles) called about money due the estate of Sam Cooke. Jerry Ragovoy (Time Is On My Side, Piece of My Heart) called just to see if he had any unpaid money floating around out there (the royalty world was a shark-filled jungle, to mangle metaphors, and I doubt it's changed).
But the pertinent client (and friend) in the present context is Earl "Speedo" Carroll, of The Cadillacs. Earl went from doo-wopping on Harlem streetcorners to chart-topping success to working as a custodian at PS 87 elementary school on the west side of Manhattan. Through all of this he never lost what made him great.
Greatness and fame are too often conflated. The former should be accessible independently of the latter.
