O IMJ – Brasil, tem como missão promover, divulgar, ensinar, preservar e desenvolver a música do povo judeu, essa grande e maravilhosa herança, em benefício da presente e das futuras gerações. Tem também, como objetivo, usar a música judaica como bandeira a favor da paz e da coexistência entre os povos. O IMJ-Brasil tem parceria e representa o Jewish Music Institute de Londres, entidade filantrópica sem fins lucrativos registrada na Inglaterra, associada à School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) da Universidade de Londres.
O que é Música Judaica?
Define-se como a música que derivou dos antigos cantos litúrgicos e orações praticadas no Levante há cerca de 3.000 anos atrás.
A música judaica vem sendo constantemente adaptada, sem, no entanto, perder sua identidade, em meio aos diferentes ambientes étnicos, sociais, religiosos e culturais, em que tem existido e até florescido.
A música do Judaísmo é um dos elementos fundamentais para a compreensão das tradições sagradas e seculares da Europa e do Oriente Médio, primeiramente por ter influenciado e posteriormente, por ter sido influenciada pela música do Cristianismo e do Islamismo.
O estudo da música judaica abrange vários gêneros de música religiosa, semi-religiosa, popular e erudita, utilizada nas sinagogas, nos lares, utilizando textos ou temas judaicos. A música judaica hoje, inclui uma vasta diversidade de tradições musicais, temas instrumentais, e de canções em diferentes idiomas.
