The Child Prisoners in Burundi’s Adult Jails | Unreported World

Go to → Ramita Navai
In Burundi, hundreds of children are being locked up in adult prisons alongside some of the most dangerous criminals in the country. The failing justice system in the small African country means many of the young children are jailed without trial - most completely unaware of their basic human rights. But one man, ex-policeman Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa, has dedicated his life trying to free those children. He claims he was wrongly imprisoned himself for possessing an illegal weapon, and vowed he would spend his life fighting injustice if he was ever set free. Reporter Ramita Navai travels to visit Burundi’s boys behind bars and the man who’s trying to get them out. This episode first aired on 13/05/2011.
