The Future is STEAM-Y, But what about Inclusion? | Nettrice Gaskins | TEDxFenway

Dr. Nettrice Gaskins has spent years exploring culturally responsive, arts-based approaches to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Her brand of STEAM has reached cultural institutions such as the Smithsonian and Boston Arts Academy, the city’s only public high school for the visual and performing arts. Sprinkling her talk with several examples of out-of-the-box approaches to STEAM learning, Gaskins also shares ways that educators can engage students who are historically underrepresented. From self-taught engineers whose works expand accepted definitions of technology to artists who collaborate with scientists and mathematicians, this presentation challenges people to re-imagine the learning environment. This means engaging a variety of people who bring their own unique learning and teaching styles, abilities, experiences and backgrounds.
