Tony Kofi, one of the UK's most original jazz saxophone players, has an international reputation, and has been a highly valued core member of the Grand Union Orchestra for 25 years. He was born in Nottingham to a Ghanaian family, and in this conversation with GUO composer Tony Haynes, he talks about his early life, and the part his African roots have played in shaping his personal style and artistic identity. The video concludes with a performance of his composition Jubilation, which makes ingenious play with the alternation of West African and Northeast Brazilian rhythms in the two sections of the tune, and the solos.
