Swinging & Grooving in 7 | “Seven Things in 7”

All The Things You Are- this standard tune has been covered by just about every jazz musician. Yet, hardly anybody does it in an odd time meter. This feels very comfortable to me; the beautiful chord changes seem to flow even more naturally when played in 7/4 and 7/8. I did 2 versions of this song- one on a C harmonica, another one on a G harmonica and piano simultaneously. I soloed on the 1st one to a track with a swing feel; the 2nd one is much looser, with sections in free time, 7/4 and 7/8. (of course, both versions are 100% improvised) About “Seven Things in 7”: Odd time meters can be tricky to play in at first, but once you get familiar with them, that will change- each one has its own symmetry and swing. For me, 7/4 and 7/8 are two of the most comfortable odd time meters to play in. So I came up with this playlist showcasing different styles of music, all in 7/4 or 7/8. I hope you enjoy them and maybe give it a try yourself. “All The Things You Are” by Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II., 1939 0:00 Intro 0:14 On harmonica in 7/4 3:23 On harmonica & piano in 7/4 & 7/8 The harmonicas I use in this video: customized Hohner Marine Bands
