Blues with panpipes? As crazy as it sounds, Texas bluesman Henry Thomas recorded his classic song on guitar and “quills” in 1928. Canned Heat had a famous version in 1968, and now in 2021, I play it my way on harmonica. Find out more about it in the video. Going Up The Country, also know as Bull Doze Blues, was recorded in Chicago. It follows the standard 12-bar blues form, has an iconic panpipe melody and many verses. Over the years, people have played it on many different instruments- flute, guitar, harmonica, melodica, and more. In this video, I play a G harp in 1st position using overblows and overdraws, which makes it even bluesier. “Going Up The Country” by Henry Thomas, 1928 0:00 Intro: Texas Blues, Henry Thomas 2:18 Going Up The Country 5:27 Bonus scene: panpipes The harmonica I use in this video: Hohner G Marine Band with Special 20 reed coverplates customized by Joe Filisko ~2003.
