Mallai Chroch Shli by Duncan Chisholm

Go to → Duncan Chisholm
This set starts with 'Mallai Chroch Shli', a beautiful Irish song and second up is a jig written by Gordon Duncan called 'The Soup Dragon' The final tune is called 'The Flooded Meadow' and is the title music to BBC Scotland's 'Landward' programme. At the end of the 19th Century, my great grandfather and great grandmother were living in a place called Athnamullach in Glen Affric. This was a solitary cottage 8 miles away from the nearest other dwelling. In the winter of 1900 there was a deep snow that cut them off for 6 weeks. At the end of this time there came a quick thaw with heavy rain and the River Affric broke its banks and flooded over the meadow, marooning them in their house for 3 days. My great grandmother used to say that she remembered looking out of the window at night, seeing the moonlight reflecting on the water around the house and thinking how frightening it was, yet how beautiful also. This story inspired the tune.... The track is performed live on this clip, accompanied by a core traditional band and a string / brass ensemble."
