Here's a special project I'm very honored to have taken part in, we're creating content to help raise funds for the legendary Wayne Shorter to assist him with medical expenses. This campaign was created by #VerasHeartbeat, we have the extraordinary #GretchenParlato singing, #JohnTegmeyer on clarinet, #MarkGuiliana on drums, myself on the guitars/arrangement/audio and video production. We hope you love this as much as we do! Below are some of my thoughts about the great #WayneShorter How can a person like me introduce a project for Wayne Shorter? I could say with no exaggeration he's one of the pillars of Jazz music, American music, New music. However, in a way I'd feel like saying those things would somehow put him in a box that can't contain him. He goes beyond those categories. I could talk about some instances of his musical expression that have been important in my life, but there are just too many notable ones to pick from and too many to mention here! So I'll just say that when I listen to Wayne's music - whether it be his playing or his writing, as a sideman or frontman - it's the closest I feel to observing a piece of high art. It feels more like I'm seeing it than hearing it. In my mind it registers in the same way as taking my time and contemplating the gorgeous colors on a Van Gogh, or getting that broken/yet whole sensation from a Picasso, or being transported to an impossible world looking at a Dalí. I, like so many other musicians and music lovers, love Wayne's music dearly and I'm humbled to be introducing this ongoing series of recordings, made by musicians of my generation, to honor one of the greatest creative forces of our time - the great Wayne Shorter.
