Life & Work

  • Bio: Born in Bojano, a small town in the region of Molise, in 1983, Flavio Sala comes from a family with over 100 years of musical tradition. "I was sure I could not play, because I'm left-handed. One day my father put a guitar into my arms and showed me some chords. As soon as I touched the strings, I immediately realized I had found my way. I was just 7."

Winner of prizes in the most prestigious guitar competitions (Gargnano 2001, Michele Pittaluga 2003, San Francisco 2004, Alirio Diaz 2006, Alexander Tansman 2008), Flavio Sala has appeared with the Jury Bashmet New Russia Orchestra, the Turin and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela, with the Vladimir Spivakov's "Virtuosi di Mosca's" String Quartet, has played repeatedly at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow (replacing once the flamenco guitarist Gerardo Núñez), at the Hermitage Theater in St. Petersburg, at the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires, at the Grand Teatro das Artes in Belo Horizonte, at the Politeama Theater of Palermo, giving concerts in:

Italy, Spain, Austria, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Argentine, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, United Arab Emirates and United States of America...

Pupil of Oscar Ghiglia at the "Accademia Chigiana" of Siena, Flavio Sala dreams of a new dimension for his instrument, today mistreated and with no public. "When I was a teenager, Andres Segovia was my God. Then I listened to Paco de Lucia and I realized that the classical guitar could be much more than what it was: incorporating the flamenco and acoustic guitarists’ technique I could widen my vocabulary. I do not stop being a classical guitarist just because of this, but while the purists are concerned with defending the trophies won by someone else and closed in the 'Museum of Tradition', our instrument languishes in the ghetto of guitar festivals. Guitar needs a new audience."

"Flavio Sala Plays Pop", a solo recording album, and "De La Buena Onda", which includes Marcus Miller, Toninho Horta, Jorge Pardo, Mango, Cliff Almond, Otmaro Ruiz, Carles Benavent, Rubem Dantas, Giovanni Baglioni, Rome String Quartet, Alain Perez, Israel "El Piraña", Peppino D'Agostino, Alex Acuña, Daniel Binelli, Huascar Barradas and his brother Simone Sala, have opened a new path for the classical guitar. "After playing 1000 times the same pieces written for classical guitar, I felt in a prison. These albums gave me a new air to breathe and working with these great musicians was an extraordinary experience."

Between 2006 and 2012 he lived for 5 years in Venezuela. After winning in Venezuela the "XIV Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Clásica Alirio Díaz" of Carora and the "Special Award to the best performance of music from Venezuela" by the "Fundacion Vicente Emilio Sojo" of Caracas, Flavio has become one of the most authentic voices of Venezuelan music for guitar, "considered a third category, but it is precisely the popular roots that make people fall in love with our Giuliani and Rodrigo and not the other way round!" In Venezuela, Flavio had the opportunity to meet some personalities, such as José Antonio Abreu, Gustavo Dudamel, Claudio Baglioni, Steve Howe, Rafael "Pollo" Brito, Guillermo Moron as well as playing in Venezuela, Cuba, Italy and Greece as a soloist with the "Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela".

In 2014 he moved to the United States of America, with an "O-1 Visa for Artist", giving 90 concerts in two years. "There I studied and understood the Music Business, starting to work on my plan". He has published "Mi Guitarra y Mis Amores" (2016), a new album where his guitar duets with Steve Howe (YES, Asia), Fabrizio Bosso, Cesar Orozco, Antonio Serrano and Rafael "Pollo" Brito: an album that closes the circle.

He plays classical instruments and flamenco handmade by Camillo Perrella. "I am lucky to know a luthier who meets all the needs of the guitarist of the XXI Century and who puts his creativity always at the service of the guitarist, innovating and never copying. Camillo Perrella is a genius, but I'm still the only one who knows that."

Definitively back to Italy, in his native Bojano, Flavio Sala is also a Guitar Professor at the "Lorenzo Perosi” of Campobasso, the same where he studied for 9 years, inheriting the position of his teacher, Pasqualino Garzia.

Always attracted by technology, Flavio gives Online Skype Guitar Lessons to students from all over the world and of all levels, creating a sort of an Underground Guitar School.

Pathways from Brazil

THROUGH THE INTEGRATED GLOBAL CREATIVE ECONOMY

(all is closer than we imagine)

"I am thrilled to receive your email! Thank you for including me in this wonderful matrix."
✅—Susan Rogers
Personal recording engineer: Prince, Paisley Park
Director: Music Perception & Cognition Laboratory, Berklee College of Music
Author: This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You

The matrix was created in Salvador's Centro Histórico, where Bule Bule below, among magisterial colleagues for whom this matrix was originally built, sings "Chegou a hora dessa gente bronzeada mostrar seu valor... The time has come for these bronzed people to show their worth..."

Created because in common with most cultures around our planet, the preponderance of Brazil's vast cultural treasure has been impossible to find from outside of circumscribed regions, including Brazil itself...

Music & lyrics (Brasil Pandeiro) by Assis Valente of Santo Amaro, Bahia, Brazil. Video by Betão Aguiar of Salvador.

Thus something new under the tropical sun: A means by which those above, those below, and EVERYBODY ELSE in the creative economy can be divulged EVERYWHERE.

Quincy Jones can curate Gilberto Gil, for example. And Gil can curate, writers, dancers, filmmakers, painters, record producers, set designers...Luê Soares of Belém do Pará behind the mic above. You get to Quincy, you can get to Luê. Direct line.

And by the mathematics of the small world phenomenon, everybody in the matrix will tend to proximity to everybody else, in the same way that most human beings are within some six or so steps of most others.

The difference being that in the matrix, these steps are along pathways that can be travelled. The creative world becomes a neighborhood. Quincy Jones is right up the street and Branford Marsalis around the corner. And the most far-flung genius you've never heard of is just a few doors down. Maybe even in Brazil. Laroyê!
"Matrixado!"

✅—Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
President of Brazil

The matrix is the ultimate evolution of a pathway which began in New York City decades ago per the "rescue" of unpaid royalties for Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Mongo Santamaria, Gilberto Gil, Astrud Gilberto, Airto Moreira, Jim Hall, Led Zeppelin, Philip Glass, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd of Kingston's Studio One (Bob Marley's producer), and others. A long and winding road that led inexorably to the necessity of a truly open arts universe, for there is more in Heaven and Earth...

"Many thanks for this - I am  touched!"
✅—Julian Lloyd Webber

That most fabled cellist in the United Kingdom (and Brazilian music fan)

"I'm truly thankful... Sohlangana ngokuzayo :)"
✅—Nduduzo Makhathini
Blue Note recording artist)

"Thanks, this is a brilliant idea!!"
✅—Alicia Svigals
Founder of The Klezmatics

"This is super impressive work ! Congratulations ! Thanks for including me :)))"
✅—Clarice Assad
Compositions recorded by Yo Yo Ma and played by orchestras around the world

"Thank you"
(Banch Abegaze, manager)
✅—Kamasi Washington

Tap people, tap categories, tap curations... The matrix is a maze of tunnels within King Solomon's creative mines.

Caminhos do Brasil

ATRAVÉS DA ECONOMIA CRIATIVA GLOBAL INTEGRADA

(tudo está mais perto do que imaginamos)

"Fico muitíssimo feliz em receber seu e-mail! Obrigada por me incluir neste matrix maravilhoso."
✅—Susan Rogers
Engenheiro de gravação pessoal para Prince: Paisley Park
Diretora: Laboratório de Percepção e Cognição Musical, Berklee College of Music
Autora: This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You

"Estou realmente agradecido... Sohlangana ngokuzayo :)"
✅—Nduduzo Makhathini
Artista da Blue Note)

"Obrigada, esta é uma ideia brilhante!!"
✅—Alicia Svigals
Fundadora do The Klezmatics

"Este é um trabalho super impressionante! Parabéns! Obrigada por me incluir :)))"
✅—Clarice Assad
Composições gravadas por Yo Yo Ma e tocadas por orquestras ao redor do mundo

"Thank you"
(Banch Abegaze, empresário)
✅—Kamasi Washington

Toque em pessoas, toque em categorias, toque em curadoria... O matrix é um labirinto de túneis dentro das minas criativas do Rei Salomão.
