Our logo, designed by Walter Mariano (professor of design at the Federal University of Bahia), depicts a cortador de cana — a cane cutter — sugarcane being to Bahia what cotton was to the South of the United States. And like the cotton so laboriously harvested by hand there, the sugarcane harvested here didn't remain long in the calloused hands of those who sweated under the bright sun for it.

The cana was taken and crushed, but the overarching spirit of the harvesters — manifested above all in the limited means available to them — music and dance — in common with other musical places around our world — wasn't. This  is what our logo is meant to celebrate ("Cana Brava" is the name of the record shop out of which the matrix grew).
